Was great to be able to sus out the route while someone was on it. We took some pictures, so if you'd like some copies, just pm us. How did you go? Did you make it up before dark? We were a bit worried when we passed you on the way down.

Jamb junkie 3 years (17/06/09 8:53 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hey Oskar We arrived at the base of Mt Maroon Sat night and knew the climbers that you saw up on Ruby. They did get down OK all be it a long one. We blasted up Ruby the next morning in 4 hours, rapped back down via 2 x 50m raps on Phaedra (the overhanging black wave of rock 100m left of Ruby) then proceeded up again in an even faster 2.5 hours...pretty sure we can get it safely under 2 hours now...we saw quite a few walkers on the Sunday as well...I'll pass the message on to the climbers from Saturday to see if they want some photos...many thanks!!! Depends on your state of mind at the time. My climbing partner had canceled late, so I went out Maroon to explore, and took some shoes with me to have a bit of a boulder around, just to touch rock. Was always interested in that sickle thing to the left of Ruby so I wandered up the first pitch of ruby to have a look at the top section. Then decided that I'd get a better look from further up and went over and peered over the edge of the sickle to see what could be seen. Was nearly at the start of pitch three then so I went up for the hell of it and just kept going. There's nothing there that cannot be down climbed, if I thought going up was risky, so just kept moving. It was a nice view at the big ledge at the top of pitch three and I knew that the other two pitches are just a jug haul, so there was no hurry. I just sat there and pondered views on soloing well below your limit. Certainly wasn't out to prove anything, just enjoying the moment and taking in how quickly you move without having to place gear, build anchors and worry about other peoples safety as well as sit there belaying getting cold. Would do it again if in the right mind space.

Jamb junkie 3 years (30/06/09 9:42 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Rightarmbad Quite understandable that a route such as Ruby would occaisionally be soloed...the rock is solid, the grade is low, the route gets lots of traffic and has little suspect rock to worry about and there is really no technical reason that it cannot be safely soloed. I sometimes wonder if running it out long distances whilst carrying 4 - 5kg of rack as well as a Camelbak of water, would be more risky. In the event of a fall, the outcome would pretty much be the same...just be easier to find your body at the end of the pretty rope!!! The mental stumbling block is the biggest hurdle to get over (and having a family now sort of takes it out of the equation...!) so I applaude anyone who, as you stated, finds themselves in the right state of mind to go for it. I remember when I soloed the Beerwah Bolt Route (not rope soloed), the thing I found the hardest to deal with ws the extra risk wasn't traded off for speed...it was as slow as doing the climb with another person and roped/belayed...I could have gone faster but was very paranoid about being attached to atleast 2 bolts most of the time...but mentally, at the end of the climb I was toasted...and vowed I would never do it again. Soloing Ruby in my opinion would be less demanding as you would be off the climb and out of the risk zone much faster...as in the mountains...sometimes speed is safety. In no way is this meant to promote soloing...just respect those that occaisionally dabble in this dark art!!! Steve

Sometimes the clarity is there and the moment is perfect.....a moment that is as far removed from blind as it is from chest-thumping bold, just quiet and perfect. Soloing Ruby I can see has the potential to be transcedental, but soloing the Beerwah bolt route.... that has to be excruciating. Whatever possessed you to do that Steve?
