A top rope system failed. The system consisted of a single piece of tube tape over a sharp edge with NO rope protector. The climb they were on was XXXX. After attemping the 'dyno' several times by both climbers the tape finally cut through. On the news it reported that the climber was in a critical condition. I was there and saw it all and he definately was NOT abseiling...!!! Non redundant single anchor of tatty tape without rope protector was sliced clean through by sharp rock along the sides of a V-shaped crack at the top of XXXX...! Best wishes for a recovery...preferably speedy but I'd take anything after seeing that!!! Steve

Col, How are you coping this monring? I guess from your writing you were there? I like that article Tris, at least she is pre-empting any knee jerk reaction which is good. I've seen what sounds like that set up before but ws on the way out to pack up. I couldn't have been arsed to go back down and say anything. I did look at it and shake my head. Long long ago I remember thread on TR set ups here where tape was said to be ok.. I've been searching but not yet found it. I remember I thought it should have been screamed down, becuase this is what I was taught but general concesus was it was ok. I'm just as guilty as the next person for walking past these rigs and in hind sight perhaps should have made an effort. Here is something similar to what I was looking for. A terrible situation which hopefully some good can come from. Perhaps it would be prudent (& possibly quite helpful to the community) for someone from QCA and/or one of the reputable commercial cliff users, to contact Helen Abrahams and present her a climbers perspective on the community and it's use of the cliffs and associated issues. You can't make informed decisions, without first being informed.

We hate to see this stuff happen. So, we talk a lot about dodgy setups. I guess all we can do is keep talking and keep educating each other. This incident should serve as a sobering reminder. This is not the first time a tape toprope setup has failed at KP due to abrasion. Toproping on XXXX would often indicate some level of climbing competence, yet it is obvious that climbing competence does not equal a competence in safety or anchor-building. Long long ago I remember thread on TR set ups here where tape was said to be ok.. I've been searching but not yet found it. I remember I thought it should have been screamed down, becuase this is what I was taught but general concesus was it was ok. There is nothing wrong with tape as such. However if you're using it, the edges need to be very well padded, and obviously your anchor needs to be redundant (unlike what was used). No doubt that given a choice, static rope is the better option.

I was further along the cliff. First I knew about it was when LOTS of blue and red flashing lights turned up. Climb Hard, Climb Safe.

Later on the other side of the cliff, away from the climbers, i heard the guy taking about risky behavior as he and the camera man were filming the other half of the story and discussing how to stitch the footage together. I can't help but feel the footage is going to get twisted into something completely different to what these climbers were told the footage was for. I wonder what kinda laugh i'm going to get out of the 'news' when i get home tonight...

Peta was immediately cornered by the ABC radio - was refreshing to finally hear someone with a good point of view gathered from years of experience telling it as it is. We eventually got climbing, but after not much more then a warm up or 2, the channel 10 news crew rolled up. Again, all the right things were said. We kept climbing, as the sun was creeping close. Naturally they asked 'what happens if we fall'. We replied 'nothing really', and Russ took a small jump to show what happens. Fall was clean and soft (on Honed and Buffed), and (surprise), nothing happened. What have we to hide? They would get thier footage either way. All of our numbers are known to many on these boards, so give us a call if you think it was out of line - would rather not have this blown all out of proportion on a web forum. Cheers! ~Adam Power

Jamb junkie 3 years (26/09/08 5:50 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Channel 10 asked me for a comment as I was riding past on the MTB, as I had a Top Rope Course to run...the guy nearly creamed himself when he found out I was 10m away when it happen but when he asked for an interview I said "No thanks, mate, you can't even get the basic facts correct (abseiling versus climbing). I am sure the footage will be edited into a " Touching The Void" type mega drama (Touching The Point??????). The basic pointers are this:- 1) Pilot error due to poorly constructed, non redundant, non edge protected anchor system...the only good news to come out of this whole thing is that the innocent party (his belayer, who knew nothing of the top rope setup), did not crater on his numerous climbs of the same route in the previous hour before the accident happened to the anchor builder. 2) The climber had a perfectly good abseil line/fixed dynamic rope (hence the medias error in reporting an abseil accident) only inches from his tape anchor and attached to the same bollard, and he chose NOT to tie a figure of eight into this and attach it (with a locker) to his tape anchor as a backup. 3) Even with a non redundant anchor of tube tape, a single rope protector would have prevented the whole incident. 4) The guys who gave medical assistance to the climber whilst I called 000 were awesome...well done to you all!!!!!! 5) The media SUCK the big one!!!!!!!!
