Although sport climbing is not my passion, I have had hundreds of hours of enjoyment clipping bolts here in SE QLD. What a range of routes there are here,
on Tibro alone there's enough variety to keep most people happy for a long time.
With the events at Mt Flinders I have had a good think about what I'm actually contributing to when I climb in this region.
First of all I thought about Frog, do I want bolts at Frog...? NO I don't, I do however respect that there are others who are entitled to a different
view. So what am I going to do to show I don't want them there?.....easy, I'm not going to clip them. For me there are plenty of other routes to keep
me busy and give me a greater satisfaction.
Then I thought about the Glasshouse, definetly a place, im my opinion, that's all the richer due to the time and effort that people have taken in
developing routes there...Slider - what a great place to spend an afternoon in the summer. Line of Credit & Blabbermouth are two easier routes that also
see a lot of traffic.
Mt Flinders, as everyone knows had recently been developed as a fantastic new sport crag. Granted, most of the routes there are too hard for me but I can
appreciate the quality of them. I'm aware that there are plenty of people who think that bolts should never have been placed there, just as there are
others, like me, who think that it is an appropriate area to have been developed. If there were routes like Blabbermouth at Flinders, how many more people
would have made the walk up and clipped the bolts? Who knows, but I'll bet there's a few!
So, although I have never actually placed any bolts in a climb here, I think I have encouraged others to do so by the very act of climbing their routes, and,
as such, I think I'm guilty by association.
If I ever hear of a climber being fined for placing bolts at Frog, I personally would support the fine. However, with Flinders I support the climbers and I
think it's appropriate that I should give a small donation to one of the four who were ordered to pay $375 for the placement of something I believe in.
Does anyone else think they're guilty? I'm sure no matter how small, any donation would be gratefully received.
I hope that Ross, Antoine, Glen & Cameron don't object to me posting this.
Happy climbing.......whatever part of the sport you enjoy.
Bill
