Sorry, but I agree. This is bad press for climbers in general.
You only need one pudgy bbqing top-end beaurocreat to be watching and we have the facility closed, and a further entrenchment of the idea that climbers are all narcissistic, i'm-better-than-you, nyah-nyah, thrill-seekers.
The subtlety that that you can roost up 10 grades higher and that the car-trip there was more dangerous is lost on non-climbers.
Thumbs down. If you value anyone touching real rock versus fibreglass in SEQ, try to remember that we're "on show" as a sub-culture and nowhere more so than at Roo Pt. And on-show as to whether we should be allowed, not on-show for people to applaud. They won't. Most of the public at large think we're stupid, not super, even when roped up. Don't delude yourself otherwise. The public generally doesn't appreciate what we do, and the authorities sure don't, so this just makes it even harder to "sell" our ethical responsibility to the people who have the "gate keys".

My policy is to solo only at 10 below my current TR grade. Thats pretty low, there aren't many at KP, but it kicks in with low grade mountaineering climbs, where I believe safe soloing is the king - in wilderness, where you don't want to haul in truck loads of gear just to get up a short technical step on a mountain climb. I appreciate that Mr.Mystery is probably a 30 grade climber and a 20 is a ladder. Same principle, hence why I didn't say "yer a nut!". (Go have a solo shot at Vidler's Chimney, or Out of the Blue Into the Black, or East Face Barney, or the chimney on east Crookneck, take a video crew and youtube it.)
My critique is about the very difficult PR problem that this starts for the community of climbers and hey, I think most climbers *would* prefer legal access to crags to running some criminal gauntlet. Most of us have jobs and want passports, and some of those things depend on not having a "record" thanks. Anarchy is all well and good, until *the man* (really) takes away something you actually want. Crookneck's not much of an example because it's not policed, but that will change. The amount of housing going up in close confines to it means that in ten years or so, you are guaranteed to have a local retired busy-body phoning the police everytime someone appears anywhere on the spike. Not because they care whether you live or die, but becuase they believe it's *their* mountain and will make sure visitors are sent packing as long as there's an access prohibition. In 20 years, unless there's a legal access model well-established it's going to be a basket case. In the 80's it was pineapples and pine trees as far as the eye could see from every GHM.
"the needs of the one / the needs of the many" classic conundrum. It's not always one way, there's a bit of both needed in most cases.
